Church and Gnosis – A Study of Christian Thought and Speculation in the Second Century

Various aspects of the relationship between Church doctrine and gnostic thought are discussed, providing a highly informative analysis of a complicated topic.

Full Title: Kabbalah, the Harmony of Oppposites; A Treatise Elucidating Bible Allegories and the Significance of Numbers

A Treatise Elucidating Bible Allegories and the Significance of Numbers. Contents: General Outline of Kabbalah; Inner Significance of the 22 Letters Comprising the Hebrew Alphabet; Book of Concealed Mystery; Humanity, Spiritual and Physical; Kabbalistic Use and Significance of Numbers; Kabbalistic Views of the Human Soul, its Nature and Destiny; Kabbalistic Doctrine Concerning Cause and Effect (Karma); Secret Tradition in Israel. Zohar-Serpent and Fall of the Angels; Biblical Traditions Kabbalistically Considered; Abraham, Melchisedec, Moses and the Law; Doctrine of the 3 Temples of the Messiah; Kabbalistic Teachings Concerning the Soul, Its Nature and Its Destiny.

“In any attempt to popularize such an essentially mystical work as the Kabbalah the main point to be kept in view is that “Kabbalah” is a word of far wider significance than is commonly supposed; it is indeed equivalent to “Hermetic” when that term is employed in a wider than ordinary historical connotation. The Jewish Kabbalah is regarded by many scholars as a work of doubtful age and still more dubious authenticity ; it is therefore unwise to attempt to speak dogmatically concerning its origin in our present state of relative uncertainty concerning it. But waiving these particular questions, which rightfully pertain only to scholastic controversy, it is entirely within the scope of a popular treatise to consider the main idea which Kabbalah invariably stands for independently of moot questions regarding the authority or authenticity of any special book or books.”

The Equinox (subtitle: “The Review of Scientific Illuminism”) is a series of publications in book form that serves as the official organ of the A.’.A.’., the mystical order of Aleister Crowley (although material is often of import to its sister organization, Ordo Templi Orientis). Begun in 1909, it remains one of the definitive works on occultism and magick, while several issues also contain poetry, fiction, plays, artwork, and biographies. The last issue was published in 1998.

The Equinox, also called The Review of Scientific Illuminism, has become the standard for English language esotericism, aptly termed the “Encyclopedia of Initiation” by its principal editor and contributor, Aleister Crowley. The great variety and depth of its contents encompass Qabalah, tarot, yoga, and the essential papers of Crowley’s teaching order, A. A. The new edition is supplemented by Crowley’s serialized biography along with excerpts from his many diaries, an overview of the Golden Dawn System, a book-length special section of the Qabalistic dictionary Sepher Sephiroth, fiction, poetry, book reviews, and extracts from The Vision and the Voice and The Rites of Eleusis as well as important works by other noted authors such as The Key of the Mysteries by Eliphas Levi. Crowley’s extensive annotations from his personal copies have been collected at the end of the set, along with biographies of the contributors.

A unique and concise introduction to Underhill’s wide-ranging thought, from mysticism and community life to prayer and social action, this new collection of essays brings together some of the author’s most enduring work. Showing the impressive range of social issues Underhill considered in depth, as well as her practical approach to living the spiritual life, this delightfully clear and accessible compilation offers valuable advice and true inspiration.

These nine essays deal with various aspects of the general subject of mysticism. Some discuss its general theory and practice and others deal with its application as seen in the lives and works of the mystics, from the pagan Plotinus to the Christian contemplatives of our own day.

Evelyn Underhill, a novelist and poet, published her first book in 1902 but her growing interest in mysticism led in 1911 to her greatest work, Mysticism. This classic text immediately established Underhill as the leading writer in the field, and she continued her work by writing many more significant and acclaimed books and essays. In 1921 she became Upton Lecturer in the Philosophy of Religion at Manchester College, and was the firt woman to give a series of lectures on theology at Oxford.

Full Title: Freemasonry and Catholicism: An exposition of the Cosmic Facts Underlying These Two Great Institutions As Determined by Occult Investigation

“The Rosicrucian Fellowship aims to educate and construct, to be charitable even to those from whom we differ, and never to vent the venom of vituperation, spite, or malice even upon those who seem deliberately determined to mislead. We revere the Catholic religion; it is as divine in its essence, as Mystic Masonry both, are rooted in hoary antiquity, both were born to further the aspiration of the striving soul, and both have a message and a mission in the world not apparent upon the surface today, because man-made ceremonial as a scale has hidden the kernel of divinity in each. It is the object of the present articles to remove that scale and show the Cosmic purpose of these two Great Organizations, which are so bitterly antagonistic to each other. We do not aim to reconcile them, however, for though they are both designed to farther the emancipation of the soul, their methods are different, and Jjbg attributes of the soul fostered by one method will indeed be very different from the quality of the soul nurtured in the other school. Therefore the strife must continue until the battle for the souls of men has been lost and won. The issue is not, however, the persistence of the Masonic or Catholic institutions; but the outcome will determine the nature of the training humanity will receive in the remaining Periods of our evolution. We shall endeavor to show the cosmic root of both of these institutions, the purpose of each and the training which each will inaugurate, if successful ; also the nature of the soul quality which may be expected to result from each method. “

This classic Masonic esoteric work is designed for the student seeking far deeper meanings in Masonry. Leadbeater reveals how the Masonic ritual is a scientific way of energizing the Masonic lodge and its faithful members so as to bring about an attunement with the Great White Lodge. In the words of the author: “Although the book is primarily intended for the instruction of members of the Co-Masonic Order, whose desire, as is expressed in their ritual, is to pour the waters of esoteric knowledge into the Masonic vessels, I hope nevertheless that it may appeal to a wider circle, and may perhaps be of use to some of those many Brn. in the masculine Craft who are seeking for a deeper interpretation of Masonic symbolism than is given in the majority of their Lodges …” C.W. Leadbeater (1854-1934), was an English clergyman and respected theosophical author. Leadbeater is the author of the popular “Freemasonry and Its Ancient Mystic Rites.” This is an indespensible work for the esoteric Mason - Written for the handful of Masons who seek to understand the true occult-theosophical workings of Freemasonry.
